Julie McGowan graduated from the University of Ulster with a BA (Hons) in Fine and Applied Arts in 1998 and completed a Master of Fine Art in 2000. Originally trained in traditional sculpture, her practice has continually evolved through experimental processes and interdisciplinary ways of working.

Her studio practice spans sculpture, installation, sound, film, photography, field recording, and new media, with each element continually informing the other. Current work explores environmental systems, resonance, vibration, sensory experience, and observational process through experimental image and sound-based research.

McGowan has developed and delivered a wide range of exhibitions, collaborations, community projects, workshops, and participatory arts programmes across Northern Ireland and internationally.

Recent work includes cymatic studies, river-based field recording, immersive installation, and environmental sound research.
