Shliocht. The first movement opens with a dark melody using flute and alto flute. Each line moves independently, creating dissonance and resolution with one another as they intertwine. The use of multiphonics with trills encapsulates the bird-like qualities of Sweeney's transformation, with hints of his madness apparent in the two-octave leaps, extended techniques, "cha" vocal effects, and scalar passages towards the end. A slow air sets the scene for the second movement, developing into a contemporary jig, which descends chromatically. The descension of the jig creates a feeling of unease and loss of control as it falls. The ending reminisces back to the opening duet on flute and alto flute.
