Ghost Nets

Exhibited as part of ECO Sublime, the International Biennial for Paper & Fibre Art, Taiwan, 2017–18.

Ghost Net was a collaborative installation by Julie McGowan, Sandy Turley and Kathryn Nelson, exhibited as part of ECO Sublime, the International Biennial for Paper & Fibre Art, Taiwan (2017–18).

Constructed from hand-knotted mesh suspended within the gallery space, the work drew on the form and presence of abandoned fishing nets found within marine environments. The installation explored the ecological impact of ghost nets, the relationship between coastal communities and the sea, and the traces left by human activity within fragile ecosystems.

Projection, text and sound formed part of the installation. Julie McGowan's accompanying sound work, Harbour, was developed from field recordings made in Portavogie, Ardglass and along the Irish coastline.

Developed through Shore Collective, the project was exhibited in Taiwan and later presented at Ards Arts Centre and Dundalk Institute of Technology.
